The Age of Popular AstrologyDuring the 20th century, horoscope columns made their way into popular magazines and daily newspapers. These were the brain child of the English astrologer R.H. Naylor, who wrote an article about astrology for the Sunday Express in 1930. Soon, everyone wanted to know about the zodiac signs and what the future held for them. At the same time, there was a swing back from almost total scorn for astrology to a serious, speculative interest in the subject among educated people such as Carl Gustav Jung. He suggested that the zodiac types could be seen as archetypes of the human personality, displaying all its potentials. As part of Jung's research into astrology, he studied the birth charts of 483 married couples (966 charts in all). He found that in the twinned charts of happily couple people there was a statistically significant presence of the aspects, traditionally indicative of a satisfactory relationship. Jung's public standing contributed strongly to convince those naturally interested in the subject that it was worth serious study. Jung famously said, 'We are born at a given moment, in a given place and, like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season of which we are born.'
