Healthy Relationship Tips

As a relationship therapist, I'm often asked about my best healthy relationship tips. I usually try to steer clear of the obvious advice: enhance your communication skills, improve your conflict management skills, and have date nights... you know, the advice everyone gives. All of these are important, but for me healthy relationships are about so much more. More than anything else, it's about the energy that we bring into a relationship.

The most important of all healthy relationship tips, is to be mindful of your energetic connection with your partner. 

Both of you have to be committed to raise each other's vibration, and the vibration of the entire relationship. This can only be done if both of you value the relationship above your own ego - and if both of you are committed to creating a loving relationship that fulfils both your needs.

A positive energetic connection between you and your partner is all about goodwill. It's about truly liking each other. It's about wanting to be in each other's company because you genuinely enjoy it. It's about a willingness to get to know each other's needs and doing your best to fulfil them. It's about being willing to cut each other some slack when one of you (or perhaps both of you) is tired or grumpy or stressed or unwell. It's about focusing on each other's strengths and actually wanting to act towards each other in loving ways.

You see... loving energy can't be faked. You can't pretend that things are okay when they're not - and get away with it for long. You can't fake happiness or caring or forgiveness... If you're energetically on a  low, then both of you will FEEL it. And whether you like it or not, both of you will always intuitively know if the relationship is working well or not, simply because you can't be in a relationship and not be tuned in to its energy.

So what do you do if you have concerns about the energetic vibration of your intimate relationship?

Here are a few more of my best healthy relationship tips:

  • Let go of your need to always be right. I know it's a bit of a cliche... but it's so very true: 'Do you want to be happy or do you want to be right?' If you're always trying to prove your partner wrong - even if he or she IS - it doesn't make for high vibes in the relationship.
  • Don't take yourself so seriously. It's okay to relax, play, laugh and have fun. In fact, it's vital. Get over yourself. Let your hair down. Laughter sparks joy.
  • Respect your partner's boundaries. We're all different... and what works for you may not necessarily work for your partner. Know their boundaries as well as you know yours, and make sure that you don't violate them. 
  • Be tolerant of your partner's quirks. Nobody is perfect - least of all YOU. We all have odd habits and mannerisms. Love your partner for who they are, faults and all.
