Happiness happens when we feel a lovely sense of inner harmony; a connection with all that is. It's a sense that, in this moment, everything is exactly as it should be.

True happiness does not depend on circumstances. It can only be cultivated from within. We can choose happiness even when things aren't perfect in our lives. It's an openness to what life brings (the good and the bad), trusting that everything happens for a reason, and confidence in our strength and power of resilience. This is what makes us feel hopeful and willing to engage with life, to take risks in the direction of fulfilling our dreams, and to accept what we cannot change if things are not going our way.

So what is it that we need to be truly happy?

Not much.

Epicurus, the ancient Greek philosopher , said happiness is as simple as a roof above our heads, food in our bellies, clothes to keep us warm and good companionship. Anything more in terms of material wealth, such as a bigger house, richer food or fancier clothes, contributes little to our sense of wellbeing.

Happiness is not a constant state. We all have varying moods, and of course we feel sad in the face of undesirable change and loss. We all react when we're disappointed, ill or grieving. It's unrealistic to expect to be happy all the time. But there are things we can do to increase our happiness exponentially - no matter what life brings.

The first is to cultivate a sense of peace. This can be done through spiritual practices, for example a daily heart meditation. It also helps to take the time to observe our own thoughts, to focus on moments when we've felt happiness, and to train ourselves to flood negative thought patterns with positive ones.

Secondly, the more love in our lives, the more we experience a deep sense of wellbeing. It's no secret that we feel at our happiest when when we have rewarding connections with other people.
