When I look at the pinched faces and rigid bodies of clients who march into my office for couples therapy, I sometimes wish I could magically wipe the furrows from their brows, feed them something scrumptious, and make them whoop with laughter. I want to say, 'Relationships don't have to be so intense. Love doesn't have to hurt so much. You're allowed to relax into each other. You're allowed to have fun.'
Where does the happiness go after those first years of rapturous togetherness? It seems to just dissolve into the busyness of life. We're all so tired these days. We try to love, but from a dry well.
What stands between us and being vibrantly happy is often just a bit of balance. It's fulfilling our duties so there's food on the table, but it's also engaging with whatever makes our souls sing. We need to share more walks in the woods, midday naps and midnight feasts. We need humour and music and passion. We need pure gratitude to move though us like flowing water.
By opening fully to the miracle of life, we can feel our woundedness, our tenderness, our courage and resilience. It's only by showing up, by denying nothing, that we are led to wholeness.
And that's the point. To stand proudly in the tide of living.
Such is the Beauty of Love.

From Awaken to Love....
'To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer. To suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy then is to suffer. But suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you're getting this down.'
