Dr. Maya Angelou is one of the greatest African American authors and poets of all time. Maya was born on April 4, 1928. Her real name is Marguerite Ann Johnson. Dr. Angelou is more than just a literary treasure. She has not only contributed to literature but she is also an accomplished actress, dancer, playwright, and film and television producer. More than anything, she has been a voice and an activist for those whose cries have gone unheard. And of course, Maya Angelou poetry is simply a cut above the rest...



A Biography of Maya Angelou

One of Maya Angelou's most famous works is I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. This writing is an autobiographical depiction of Maya's life up until the age of 17. She writes how her life was altered from living life as a victim of her circumstances, especially racism, to becoming a woman able to hold her head high with dignity.

Dr. Angelou is also renowned for Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water ‘Fore I Die. She was nominated for Pulitzer Prize for this collection of poems. Each poem is profoundly written about love, pain, sadness, and joy. Maya Angelous poems have resonated so deeply with individuals worldwide. She was the first poet to make a recital at presidential inauguration since 1961 with On the Pulse of Morning.

Maya Angelou's career has allowed her to make a difference in the world. She has been called transcendent and the voice of a generation. She has worked steadfastly for peace, love and equality with individuals such as Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Alex Haley, and many others.

She has received numerous awards including 3 Grammys, Presidential Medal of Arts, and the Lincoln Medal. Dr. Maya Angelou has been a trailblazer not only for women and African Americans but for everyone. Her works have given healing to wounded hearts and freedom to the soul and mind.
