Zen Love
Zen love is the ability to allow love to flow freely... and it's not quite as easy as it may seem.
There are few things in life as simple and as complicated as love. It's simple if our hearts are open and it flows. It's hard when we've closed our hearts due to hurts and wounds stemming from the past.
A Zen Approach to Love
A Zen approach to love includes three essential principles ~ strength, balance and flexibility. With all three, hearts can be healed. But it does take a willingness to reflect on how we can apply these on our own heart's journey.Image: Thinkstock Strength, Flexibility and BalanceWhen I meditate on the principles of strength, flexibility and balance as applied to our relationships, the image of someone holding a perfect yoga pose comes to mind. It's the ability to stand in our own power. If you've ever done yoga, you'll know that as much strength as you need to hold a pose, you also have to soften into your stance. Love is a powerful emotion, but there is nothing rigid about it. It's about being flexible in our expectations and the ability to adapt to what life gifts to us. Still, there has to be a perfect balance between strength and flexibility. When we're too soft, we can easily give our power away in unhealthy and toxic relationships. We don't say what we mean, or mean what we say. We don't act with authenticity, because we try to avoid conflict. We allow resentment to build up by being too afraid to resolve issues, or explode and act out at the drop of a hat. When we do any of these things, we lose strength - the strength of our convictions, the strength of our self-image, the strength of love itself. To be strong in relationships, is to understand that love is your birthright. You don't deserve to be mistreated and you don't have to allow a situation that disempowers you to continue. You can take the steps to heal... as long as you trust your intuition. You can heal your own heart by deciding to maintain a tranquil existence within yourself even when everything around you seems to be falling apart. Arthur Egendorf, offers this advice to maintain balance and live a life of peaceful love: 'Each of us, singly and with all the others, is answerable for creating joy through the way our lives unfold, here and now.' When you're in balance, you are much more likely to access that space of love, joy and peace that you are.
The Flow of Love
Just like the flow of the universe, the flow of love moves through everything. It's in the blossoming of nature, the billowing of the clouds, the movement of the sea. The growth cycle that every human and every relationship goes through is part of this natural flow, which is also the current that takes us on life's journey. When we move with it rather than resisting it, we are staying in the rhythm of life. Learning to step into the flow of zen love can help you to feel a connection to a force that is greater than you and is always there to support you. Our souls feel good when we move with the flow of love. All we have to do is make the choice to stay in its rhythm.
