What do you do when Christmas is hard...?
We need look no further than our Self-Care of the Soul group on Facebook to know that Christmas isn't all glowing fairy lights and happy families for everyone. Christmases without loved ones who have passed, Christmases separated from children due to family breakdown, Christmases where there's worry over illness or jobs or money...
And all around us we're bombarded with sparkly ads and picture-perfect holiday movies that seem magical when your life's on track, but can amplify your feelings if things are tough.
How can you have yourself a merry little Christmas if circumstances appear to be conspiring against you?
Here are a few ideas...
Some years, it's just different... you simply don't feel like celebrating Christmas. You may have been through some recent trauma, or perhaps you simply don't have the finances to splurge on gifts for one and all...
But when you sift through the grief or worry, there's usually still something lovely to be found. Maybe it's a sweet gesture from a neighbour. Perhaps it's a special memory, or a gorgeous conversation about Christmases past. Or maybe you're not going 'all out' this year, but you're able to get savvy with a 'less is more' theme. When Christmas is hard, look for the beautiful, even when things aren't easy...
It might be a Michael Buble song, but it's also a great concept. Write a list of changes you'd love to see in the world—starting at home and working outwards. Decide to be the change you want to see in 2016.
Time to yourself. Time to heal. Time to grow. Time to recover. Ask yourself what you really, truly, deeply need... and within the boundaries of what is possible, try to fulfil your own needs. Need some quiet time? Make it. Need to be with family and friends? Call them. Mend some bridges. Do some important forgiveness work... whatever your soul feels called to do... do THAT.
Lastly, spend some moments gazing at the first full Christmas moon in 38 years... and the last until 2034. What a special gift!
