Doing what's right for your son - scary as it is!

What a beautiful post on the love between a mother and son! Not having a daughter of my own, it's hard to compare but I know this may be the one thing for which there is no limit in your life. And it's such a challenge as they grow up! When my son was 4, he exclaimed while watching the Olympic ice skaters, "Don't they know how dangerous that is?!" The next day, I took him out and made him climb a tree. Terrifying and terrified, he reached the top in tears of triumph. Backing him up at 8 when he challenged an unfairness in school, proud of his ability to articulate a position of justice. Sending him off on his first trip to an amusement park, alone with friends at 12...how did I know he would be the one sensible enough to steer everyone away from a gang fight? Letting him take his first trip to the Big City with his buddies at 15, texting amusing anecdotes the whole way, and the logical steps he took to figure out what to do when transportation didn't cooperate. At 18, dropping him off in a foreign country, albeit in a family apartment but on his own, to live several months in a land where he didn't speak the language. And now, at 21, at the college of his dreams, so happy that he is being humbled by knowledge rather than having a cruel world humiliate him. Every step is scary, but you hold your breath, trust that you've prepared them well by respecting their intelligence and not shying away from dialog, and let them fly. And soar they do!
