Best Love Songs for Wedding Bliss

Getting married? Here are the best love songs for wedding heaven.

Love Songs for Wedding Bliss

Wedding Songs Love is all around. Love is a many-splendoured thing. Love will keep us together. All you need is love… It seems that everyone is singing about love. And what better occasion to celebrate with a love song than at a wedding?

Did you know that the modern love song is descended directly from romantic poetry? Lyrics of love songs, while not exactly literature, resonate with us and our popular music informs our notions of love and romance. When it comes to choosing the best love songs for your wedding, you have to ask yourself what your personal views of love are.

If you find love intoxicating, have a listen to You go to my Head (1938) or Joni Mitchell’s uplifting A Case of You: ’Oh you’re in my blood like holy wine / You taste so bitter and so sweet / Oh I could drink a case of you, darling / And I would still be on my feet.’

If your love is magical, consider Porter’s You Do Something to Me (1929): ’Let me live ‘neath your spell / Do that voodoo that you do so well.’ Later songs like the Sinatra standards That Old Black Magic and Witchcraft continues the theme, while in 1981 The Police had a massive hit with Every Little Thing She Does is Magic.

If you’re madly (yes, maybe even a little bit obsessively) in love with your spouse-to-be, choose one of the popular 60s hits like Goin’ Out of My Head or Cant Take My Eyes Off You And did you know that one of the most popular wedding songs of all time happens to be Sting’s Every Breath you Take (1983), originally written during the breakup of his first marriage. Upon hearing this, Sting reportedly quipped, ’Well, good luck.’

’Oh you’re in my blood like holy wine…’

If you have a sentimental streak, you may want to take a look at some of the great love song writers such as Elvis, Neil Diamond and Carole King. Also consider Stevie Wonder’s You Are the Sunshine of My Life (1973), Just the Way You Are by Billy Joel (1977), Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman (1984) and the sublime Don’t Know Why (Jesse Harris for Norah Jones, 2002.

You may wonder why no recent love songs have been mentioned yet, and all I can do is shrug my shoulders and say, ’Sorry folks, they don’t write ‘em like they used to.’ It seems that in our modern world, love songs have become ‘product’, assembled on computers by teams of specialists hoping for a hit, rather than speaking to the universal human experience.

One thing we can count on, however, is that love will continue to make the world go round!
