Love Poetry: My Friend from the Sky
by Ryan Griffin
(Red Lion, Pa)
'It was late in the summer,
When she caught my eye,
Like a gift from above,
She came out of the sky.
On my hilltop I sat,
All alone in despair,
'Til I gazed a star falling,
Shooting through the warm air.
Falling to Earth,
And escaping the stars,
She tumbled on down,
Right into my arms.
That night, in my grasp,
She laid by my side,
How we talked through the night,
'Til the morning sunrise.
But like everything good,
Things came to an end,
I knew it was time,
To say goodbye to my friend.
Everyone in the world,
Needed her, just as I,
To light up the heavens,
And return to the sky.
Not wanting to let go,
But knowing the choice wasn't mine,
She was destined for things,
Much greater than I.
I gave her back to the world,
And went on with my life,
And occasionally I still find her,
Where I did that first night.
How does the world see her,
From so far below?
Too busy to appreciate,
What I already know.
My friend in the sky,
Even though no one sees,
And despite all of the world,
You're an angel to me.
I'm all alone on our hill,
Just hoping inside,
That she still knows the way,
To return to my side.
So I patiently sit,
Awaiting the time,
When she's no longer needed,
And can truly be mine,
I find that my hopes,
Are just a fool's errant dreams,
I'm just deluding myself,
Waiting for her it seems,
But even though she's not here,
Her light's never fading,
For I know she's always within me,
So I'll always be waiting.'
