Love Poetry: Leap of Faith
by Rachel Hirschhaut
(Deerfield, Illinois)
'She waits on the front steps
her skin as soft and delicate as the rose petals in her hand
shining the fragile beauty of a newly lit candle
expectations as high as the stars
as she waits for the boy with eyes like oceans
the first ones she sees when she closes her own
With years of warnings racing through her mind
Don't run too fast or you'll slip
Don't climb too high or you'll fall
Don't spin too fast or you'll spin out of control
But they never felt the way she did
Longing to try it, no matter what the cost
He takes her hand in his
She takes that leap of faith
Ready to land in his arms
But alas, it was only the first
She landed hard on the ground, not in his arms
But the thrill of jumping was worth the pain of falling
As she dusts herself off and starts again'
