Love Poetry: A Light in the Darkness
by Ryan Griffin
(Red Lion, Pa)
'Condemned by Cupid once again
I can't believe it's come to this
How many years must come to pass
Before I again can feel your kiss?
Is this the penance for my sins?
Being robbed of my true love?
I pray the gods know what they're doing
"Cause I could curse the skies above.
The greatest warrior the world has known,
Who's never bowed to man or nation
Only to be brought to his knees at last,
By the pitiless throes of love's elation.
I would climb the great Olympus
Or descend into the deepest hell
I would wage a war upon the Earth
Or if they wish, the gods themselves.
There's nothing I wouldn't do for my love.
For none that live compare to thee
And no force on Earth is strong enough
To come between us and succeed.
If it were only sword or brawn
That were keeping you at bay
I'd cut them down like the darkest night
That breaks with the light of day.
But the one thing I cannot fight
That binds my hand in stillness,
Is the single thing that robs me now.
And makes me feel with illness.
Time and space, my only plight
Which no mortal hand can stay
Has taken hold of my true love
And spirited her light-years away.
But heavens boundaries could not contain
The shining light that is her beauty.
So it immortalized her in the skies
To light my darkness, her rightful duty.
By the stars above, burning bright
Andromeda now looks down on me
And though I'm strongest in the day, tis night
That I wish and long for it to be.
Though I'm pained without your touch,
I will endure through countless tears
And if it brings me back to you
My love, I'll wait a thousand years.
My love, shine down on me in darkness
As I know you'll always do
And I'll keep following the stars above,
Till they bring me home to you....'
