Reader Post: 'I remember my first kiss like it was a nanosecond ago...
I was sitting by myself on the swings, bothered by the fact that my best friend was sick for the day and nobody else would talk to me. As a child, I was shy and avoided socializing in fear that someone might make fun of me. So imagine my surprise when a boy --my first crush, a first grader, my nextdoor neighbour, my brother's best friend, and my future fiancee--sat down right beside me.
It surprised me even more when he started talking to me. My heart was beating faster than it ever had before and I'm pretty sure my cheeks were on fire. To say it boggled me beyond comprehension is an understatement, but we'll run with that. I was just so nervous.
So, we started talking for a while and I was relieved he had yet to pour mud on me like he usually did. This was one of the few times he would ever be nice to me as a child. We started twisting the swings around while we were still in them. Mine eventually got too close to his. The next thing I knew his eyes were closed shut and he was puckering his lips. I followed his example, did the same, and he kissed me.
It lasted two seconds and it was incredible. It was better than spinning around in circles, it was better than pretending to fly in a swing seat, it was better than getting presents on my birthday, and it was better than that Christmas morning feeling. It was my first kiss with my crush and I was ecstatic.
When I would repeat this story to my friends years later as a fourteen year-old, I would get so mad when they said that it really didn't count since we were so young. I would go tell my mother about how this upset me until I realized something: A kiss is just about being mouth-to-mouth with another person, but you have to have felt something. It has to mean something.
That's why I count that as my first kiss, because it was as if the earth shifted. In fact, I'm proud to say that the earth shifts every single time I kiss that man.'
