Happy Valentines Day!
Happy Valentines Day!
The lead-up to Valentines Day is a good time to think about celebrating love: what it really means to love and be loved – not only for one day of the year, but every day of our lives!
I fully empathize with those who don’t like celebrating Valentines Day due to the relentless commercialism that accompanies it. Yet I urge you to set the red roses and love hearts and teddy bears aside, and use this time as an opportunity to contemplate true love.
So what does true love really mean? True love is so much more than romance; than the exhilaration of being in love. It is staying in love regardless of the ups and downs of a real relationship in the real world. It’s seeing the things that are spectacular and magnificent about your partner, but also being accepting of their shortcomings and quirks. After all, it’s easy to love the most wonderful parts of another person, but you have to ask yourself whether you can accept their flaws. True love is embracing who you both are as individuals and as a couple with all of you are and all of who you are not – and enjoying the journey that is your life together.
If there is a secret to a happy relationship, it’s to consciously create a life together that makes sense in the real world. The long-standing, committed relationships that I admire most aren’t just built on endurance, but they’ve always been tinkered with. True love is a willingness to work at a relationship – even when you’re tired, or cranky, or have a headache – and not to allow fleeting and ever-changing feelings dictate the quality of your life together.
However you decide to celebrate Valentines Day this year, make it real, make it grounded in true caring for yourself and your loved one, and make it a loving memory that you can look back on with fondness for the rest of your life.
