Reader Post: 'The love of my life turned out to be my very best friend...
Most people say that members of the opposite sex can't possibly be best friends, but my best friend Alexis and I were inseparable. Well, that is until she would start dating a new guy or until I would start dating a new girl. Whenever that happened, we would take a break from one another because the fact that we were so close usually made the people we were dating feel uncomfortable. In fact, looking back, I can remember losing more than one girlfriend because of Alexis.
I'd be lying if I said there wasn't natural chemistry between us, but we never let it go deeper than light flirting. Without ever discussing it, I think we both knew that we'd rather suffer in friendship purgatory than risk dating, breaking up and possibly never speaking again.
I realized I had more than 'just-a-friend' feelings for Alexis when another couple in our circle, Brad and Julie, got married last year. Although Alexis and I were both in the wedding party, we were not paired together. As Alexis walked toward the alter, I could not take my eyes off of her. She was literally glowing from the inside out, and right then, I knew she was the love of my life. All these years I'd been searching for someone that had been there all along.
As you can probably imagine, I could hardly concentrate on the ceremony because I couldn't wait to test the waters and see if Alexis felt the same way about me. As soon as we were alone for a few minutes, I grabbed her and kissed her. To my relief, she kissed me back and said, "You have no idea how long I've wanted you to do that."
That was 2 years ago, and now we're married with a baby on the way. If I hadn't had that moment of clarity at Brad and Julie's wedding, I may have never realized that Alexis was the love of my life and the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with.'
